Home Plate Collisions

Standard

I am a bigger baseball fan than any other sport and being a former catcher of the sport I can attest to this to a certain extent. Since I’m only in high school you may be wondering, well you couldn’t have had too many problems with home plate collisions while playing little league…. There was one instance of a collision and that was enough for me, now that I think of it I have been the runner and hated the feeling of hitting a defenseless player.

As you may see, the topic today is the growing problem with home plate collisions in the MLB. When I first heard they were talking about outlawing this ruthless act I was super excited because I have seen some great catchers of the game miss play time due to getting plowed over. Players like Buster Posey who I don’t care too much for as a Fan in the east but nevertheless a great ball player miss a year and a half due to a collision, and going way back to the 1970 All-Star game when Pete Rose bulldozes Ray Fosse ending the game as well as his promising career far too short.

Even though the act of a base runner charging home from third and plowing into the catcher to score is almost as entertaining as a linebacker plastering the quarterback, the truth is… this isn’t football; there should be no purposeful collisions of any kind. I say purposeful because they’re accidental incidents that can’t be 100% percent prevented such as miss communication between outfielders, that’s just poor teamwork.

Lets put it this way, if the runner thinks they need to use force to get in safe, chances are that they know the ball has already beat them to the plate so they should be out regardless.

Thank you for listening to me rant about saving the careers of Major League catchers.

How ‘Bout Them Pacers

Standard

It maybe far too early to make snap judgements on what will be true come the end of the season but after eight games in this young NBA season, the Indiana Pacers are a very respectable 8-0 and have no signs of faltering anytime soon (that doesn’t mean I’m saying they will go 82-0 because I have a pretty good feeling it won’t happen). It seems as though this early season perfection was no fluke since two of those games were against a post season regular in The Chicago Bulls (W97-80), as well as a team seeking the postseason this year in the Brooklyn Nets (W96-91). Which leads me to believe that Indiana has a chance to challenge Miami for the Eastern Conference Finals.

You maybe wondering how the Pacers have been able to do so well without someone like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose or Kevin Durant. Well maybe they don’t need the one or two high priced players to carry the team, they just need a dynamic starting five with a lot of charisma. The Pacers are loaded with secret weapons that blend well together as a team… What a concept! Those secret weapons include the PG Paul George, the scoring machine with a good 24.9 ppg, C Roy Hibbert, who stands at a towering 7-2 is the shot blocking machine with 4.4 blks per game (Roy is so confident in his defensive ability that in a recent tweet he had already deemed himself defensive player of the year), and Lance Stephenson who is deadly from beyond the arc shooting .514% so far.

If thats not enough, the team has already been able to win without their star PG in George, beating the Bulls, blowout Cleveland in Cleveland, as well as defeating the much improved Detroit Pistons team on the road. In doing this, they have sent a clear message to the rest of the Eastern Conference that they are back for a vengeance after last years disappointing defeat in the Conference finals to the eventual Finals champs the Heat.

In my mind, the Indiana Pacers are a sure bet for the NBA Finals come spring time.

Introduction To My Page

Standard

Hello everybody and welcome to the place where you get an opinion on the current major sports stories straight from a sports fan himself, a little something I simply like to call “From The Fan.” I am a senior in high school with the goal of one day becoming a sports writer, so I figured why not get some pre-college practice on sharing my opinion on sports by way of a blog.

I’m Cincinnati born and raised so I love to watch my beloved Reds play baseball throughout the summer no matter how amazingly good or painfully horrible they can be but I do follow the rest of baseball fairly well and I’m also starting to get an interest in basketball for some odd reason I don’t even know. Becoming a basketball fan as far as the NBA is concerned is a little tough being from the Queen City since the closest team to me is Indiana being the Pacers… What do yo think about the start they’ve had? Then there is the team from the north of the buckeye state being the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now you maybe wondering, what about the other sports like football and hockey, well I didn’t watch much football until this season when I started playing fantasy (a story for another day). I don’t really follow hockey very closely until the Stanley Cup playoffs when the play is at its most intense.

All in all I am a very big sports fan who loves sharing his opinion on anything sports.
